Mali on the Take

This is the first time I'm willing to take seriously accusations of game-fixing. Maybe the mighty Slovene mafia paid him off. Maybe they threatened his family. Slovenia knocked off Russia to qualify, so maybe the Russian mob didn't want its team to look even worse. OK, this is absurd, but it was that bad. And the man doesn't have to explain himself. Great- give yahoo Americans another reason to hate soccer. Jesus.

Alright let's hope for a win tomorrow and USA on top of the group. I also rented The Damned United yesterday and can recommended a great English movie about the legendary manager Brian Clough.

I saw that movie and it's Ok. I'm still pissed about the ridiculous call. That guy was whacked out on something, and let's hope it's not bribe. Holland will probably play Italy in the first round, so I hope you guys are ready. US will, as they did four years ago against Ghana, probably gag. But we shall see.

It is absolutely ridiculous the FIFA let's these games being refereed by referees from obscure countries. It's another way Blatter bribes countries to get reelected. It's not about the game for this despot but his own grip on FIFA. He is the new sun king. And indeed another reason for all the football haters out there to hate the game even more.

I have another possible thesis- political correctness- it's the same reason they haven't banned those fucking horns. Bend over to show how tolerant you are while the quality of everything goes down the toilet. It's not racist or culturally insesitive to say that being able to chant, sing or hear the national anthem is a good thing. It's not racist to say that only the best referees based on their performances in the best leagues should participate in the world's greatest competition.

And yes, Euros, I'm looking at you- all good intentions and no common sense.

Rein, I believe we have a day. I hope you are in training, sir. Mine began with the birth of my second child.

You are absolutely right. The journalists and commentators on the websites I follow all agree with your two points. They are all appalled that the games are being led by these hopeless referees. In fact a lot of lobbying is being done to finally get video help for the referees. Unfortunately the FIFA is very conservative and it will take forever for this to happen.

We indeed have a day. I will look into if there are any bands playing in Amsterdam or Utrecht. Might be good to see a show. I will have to start training soon, I have been in sleep depraved world for seven months. I am glad things are finally starting to improve.

Are you going to Goenigen or whatever that Dutch town is called? I am almost done with We Never Learn. Really cool to hear about that garage punk scene from someone who knew or talked to all of the players

For shits and giggles... Give me your top 5 post 90s bands. I can only cone up with The Black Lips and the Reigning Sound. You?

Re FIFA... Doesn't it seem like all large international organizations choose to make token gestures to emerging markets? It's just self interest. Grow the franchise, capture new markets, nevermind the risks or downside. This is the definition of elitism.
