Cal gets go-ahead for sports training center

19:19 PDT BERKELEY -- A state appeals court refused Thursday to block UC Berkeley's plans to build a sports training center next to Memorial Stadium, denying a request from oak tree advocates and a neighborhood group for a new order stopping the project.

The court's action came after an Alameda County judge last week lifted her order preventing the university from beginning construction in a grove of trees occupied by protesters opposed to the campus' plans for the $124 million center.

"As far as we're concerned, we're clear to begin construction," said campus spokesman Dan Mogulof, who added that he did not know when the university will act. "The state Court of Appeal ruled quickly and decisively on this, and for us that's extremely significant."

Any action at the grove adjacent to the stadium will almost certainly bring a confrontation with four remaining tree-sitters who've been living in the grove. University officials called Thursday for the protesters to come down.

Funny, I also called for them to come down on Saturday night. I cannot wait for the sound of chainsaws and tears. Just awesome news.

and the boys responded- it's 42-3 at the half

Did you survive last night? Jesus, you must write that up with details. I'm still confused. Do you remember texting me from dinner?

Of course. Basically I got talked into going to the opera with my wife. Long story short, I had to exit my seat shortly after the performance began bc I was pouring sweat and it was like 100 degrees with no AC. When I tried to return from the men's room to my seat, a small fat gay man told me there were no ins and outs. So i had to sit alone in the lobby for 80 minutes while the fat people on the stage sang in Italian. I texted everyone I knew bc I was so incensed!

Later when intermission broke out everyone in our party went to a restaurant for drinks bc it was so freakin hot and dull. I vaguely recall going home with Liz later after much drinking. Paul Ruehl was totally bloto and got lucky with some Asian chick. Ernie's gf passed out later in the evening.

Hard partying Opera types. Who knew?

last tree sitters come down today. All 4 of them are arrested as are 3supporters on the ground. If there is any justice at all, they will go to jail or at least be required to pay for the delays that cost Call $100sK. What trash.

Meanwhile McCain is supposedly up by 2 pts on Obama and I get very nervous about a Democratic party cadidate's ability to fight. We are stuck in some soprt of hell where The Republicans are awful at governing but extremely gifted at campaigning. Will this ever end?

Ans where the hell is Brad? Anyone?

I feel your pain on the Dems, but they're firing back- too many folks like my mom who can't articulate a single reason but just don't trust Obama- do all the code you want

First Tuesday in November- talk about an emotional feast or famine- the cynics (hi Brad- if you ever return) will say that it makes no difference, but I'm guessing there are some military and civilian families who might feel differently.

You might have to take the death of the treesitters as this year's victory.

This country fucking gets what it deserves.

you're comments about your folks is right on. My folks are the same way. There is no reason people give for their enthusiasm for McCain and Palin from a policy perspective. Another thing to consider.... Once again we are confronted by an electoral college which will be won and lost in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida. If memory serves this has been the case for the last 2 presidential elections as well.

A lot of folks in these states are getting hammered economically and the future does not look bright for working people in these mostly industrial states. Which begs more questions....do these folks a) realize how much power they have? B) why don't they use it to get policy which helps them out?

Stoopid.

I have this theory that Obama is too good, and he makes certain people feel uncomfortable/inferior. It's as if they refuse to trust a smart, articulate black man and don't want to be suckered into appreciating him. Repubs will tell you he's just Carter in a slick package and the true believers have simply swooned for the man in their desperate need for a shining PC knight.

Maybe all things are true.

I'm not sure I know a damn thing that is clearly and distinctly true, except that Matthews and Olberman deserved their demotion, and speaking of drinking the koolaid, people were speaking positively about Barry Zito this morning.

All you can cling to is the final arrests of the treesitters. Talk about lowered expectations. I'm going to have a fiber bar and lie down for awhile.

I agree. There is something "post rational" about many people's embrace of Sarah Palin and the belief that John McCain is a maverick. Its just bizare and perhaps is driven by a deep feeling of inferiority. Shockingly that feeling is apparently stronger than acting in their own economic self interest.

did you see the interview? The woman knows nothing. Nothing.

I'm fighting rage and embarrassment and shame and rage.

McCain now leads in several polls.

I might explode

Hold me.

I can't help you other than to offer this...there will be debates soon. She will continue to be exposed as a know nothing. Also, the Obama campaign is supposed to ahve gotten the message that they need to start hitting harder adn Bill and Hillary are supposed to start working for Obama this weekend till the end of the election.

Thats the best I can do. I can not beleive that people are actually falling for this shit.

Embarrassment, shame and rage are all 100% appropriate feelings. It simply makes no sense. It makes me sick when I think about how much work is needed to repair this country and how its just going to suck for at least another 4 years if McCain wins...the transfer of wealth from us to China and the Middle East, health care, education, jobs, war. All of it will get worse.

Its frightening what we are flirting with here.

did you ever see that corny film with Michael Douglas as the president, The American President? He delivers a corny speech at the end, but one line keeps popping into my head: "We have serious problems and we need serious people to solve them." If the last eight years weren't enough to illustrate the failures of leading by ideological purity and faith, her stupidity probably doesn't matter. These are teflon times- nothing seems to be bad enough to bring 'em down. Only sex scandals are deemed ethically dubious enough to slay the powerful.

Perhaps we are the alcoholic or addict who must absolutely hit rock bottom before recognizing that this is no way to to decide who the next president is? I dont know. Im grabbing for straws. Fucking hell.

BTW- do you have a sick feeling that Bush is gonna grab Osama for a new October surprise and deliver this for the Republicans? I sure as hell do.
