Nature is Overrated

Is this the best time of the year for sports fans? The Giants actually have meaningful games after a miracle weekend, the NFL season opens soon (apparently, some people care) and the U.S. Open kicked off yesterday with a new network, ESPN, taking over from USA. There will be no more Ted Robinson playing the late-night foil to John McEnroe, but last night offered brother Patrick, John and Andre Agassi in the booth for a surprisingly candid chat while Andy Roddick was mercifully dispatching a tiny German named Bjorn Phau. Tune in tonight and catch Ms. Ivanovic (left), who is trying to resurrect a career in freefall. Giants/Phils at 4:00.

Did you just ask me to watch women's tennis?

Regarding the Giants...can anyone tell me why getting Brad Penny is such an awesome deal even at 75K? Why not bring up Madison Baumgardner? And are Martinez and Sadowski no longer wrth a shot?

I know I'm bitter but, why couldnt the news be about signing someone who can hit and play more than 2 games in a row?

Martinez and Sadowski have clearly proven that they are not yet major league pitchers.

Penny could get 5, 6 starts, and the wild card race could come down to one of those games. 75K is one bar's nightly receipts on a Tuesday Padres game.

The Dodgers got Thome, which would have meant power for the Giants, but why be bitter after last weekend? It's unbelievable that they are where they are. Enjoy the ride.

I'm trying, but the sick realization Sabean is going to get an extension is hard to shake.

Did you see Molina's pinch hit last night? He struck out after 3 pitches (all balls). Molina couldnt start the game bc his leg hurts. This is bc it must support 270 pounds all day. Take a look at his stats too. He has 5x as many strike outs as walks. 5X!

I am going to lose my shit if Molina is signed this offseason. To me this is the absolute litmus test of sanity when it comes to the Giants. If they cant see that this fat, undisciplined 37 yo catcher is not worth 15M over 2 years, then the Giants ARE DOOMED.

I did see it, and it looked pathetic. I also saw his pinch homer to rescue the team and steal an undeserved victory over the D-Backs last week. He also leads National League catchers (at least he did last week) in RBIs. It's a decidedly mixed bag with him, I'll grant you, but that last fact remains a fact. I agree he would be wildly overpaid as a mentor to Posey (who's struggling, by the way), but as hard as he is to watch on a regular basis, he is a very productive CATCHER at the plate.

I have no argument for his weight, and his speed is pathetic. Panda is going to have to lose a few too, because no way can he stay healthy carrying that load around. He's only 22 now, and you're right- the legs won't support that for long stretches.

Brad Penny tonight? I heard he used to date Alyssa Milano and she dissed him in her book as horrible in bed.
Why do I have that information in my head?

Posey is the future, his struggles in the minors be damned. We need to lose Molina's payroll, too. We need a HR hitter who has a clue and wont die of a cardiac arrest on the bases.

The part about Panda is something I ahve been thinking a lot about as he's mised games because of his calfs. This is how fat people's injuries start.

As far as Brad Penny and Milano....I can't separate Milano with Tomei. They are both WAPs with vaguely pretty faces and rockin bodies. You think Adriana from teh Sopranos is pals with them? Seems like they have a lot in common.
