Apache Dropout
This is the best new record I've heard this year, but its oddness makes description a challenge. One song sounds like Thin White Rope, but that's the only one. Another sounds like a darker Modern Lovers, but that's the only one. An ode to Johan Kugelberg includes a spoken word break about fucking in the streets. The back cover has an intense Indian woman with a nuclear blast above her head. What does all this mean? Quality, sir. No easy category quality, but that indefinable stench of goodness keeps wafting from the speakers and it's been too long since I've had a whiff. Rambling, shambling backyard yesirree quality time (fire up the barbecue and whip out the mushrooms, dad!), and we even get a singalong chorus for anthemheads ("Teenager"). Sneakily addictive and druggily pop, this wins the first half of the year for being- follow the circular logic- really, really good.

haven't really listened to it yet turntable's been broken, will have to give it a listen tonight
Bold endorsement. I will definitely check it out.
How is the Green Flash??
BTW... how did you find out about these guys?
also forgot, my band is playing an up coming show with stu (?) who used to be in thin white rope, didn't have a chance to listen to the record(apache, that is)
The Green Flash is amazing after some technical difficulties, and I believe I heard about this band on terminalboredom.
Let me know how that show goes, Tom, and what is the name of your band?
The best news is that Lucas threw four shutout innings (coming in when the team was down 5-1) and ripped a triple off the best pitcher in the league to help his crappy team to their second straight playoff win and a spot in the semi-finals. It's all about Little League in the middle years and yes I'm living vicariously through my children. I'm too old to live through myself.
I just bought a wooden Lowenbrau keg tap handle on ebay- that's how good the Green Flash is.
Jesus.
band's called the fuzz, working on album now
cool- scheduled for fall Goner release?
hopefully, not officially on the schedule right now, hut harlan is in the band and eric's been digging what we're putting down
Holy shit! You're a real rock n roller, Tom. I had no idea.
So let me ask you this.... Would The Fuzz ever play a show in California? I ask bc SF has more bars for bands to play than you can imagine, but hardly any good bands. It would be nice to hear a band from Memphis play.
we're old, none of us are very into the idea of touring
Oh, so I gotta go to Memphis to check out The Fuzz? Do I get a free plate of ribs from Cozy Corner, if I make the trip?
sure thing, it's just around the corner from my house
is that fucking in the streets stuff just read from john sinclair's guitar army? sounds familiar but it's been years since i've read it.
trying to multi-task with records going and ball game on silent, i think you would really like the straight arrows if you like this so much
sorry, turntable had been broken and i'm on a spree, i think apache burnout is kind of the bad trip to straight arrows good trip if that makes sense. the pupil's from france is pretty great on first listen, reminiscent of the saints. fungus brain's is great reissue. next the early mats 81-84 outtakes
Yea, I liked that Straight Arrows single and I want to get the record but my vinyl purchases have slowed to a crawl as prices get closer to twenty bucks a pop.
I will buy that Fungus Brains, though, and haven't heard of the Pupils but will keep my eye out.
Mats' outtakes? I hadn't heard of that- is it an actual release or a boot?
And got ya, I think, on the "bad trip" thang- it's got that acid desert trip bad juju feel to while still managing to be catchy- not an easy trick
the mats had me cracking up, mainly differany versions of songs we already know, seems like a couple unreleased songs as well. it's a boot
